Marcus York has been in a wheelchair since the age of 22 as the result of a car accident, and now he is a celebrity to the American public on NBC’s The Office.  York has taken his celebrity status and used it to serve his mission of helping people with spinal cord injuries get out of a wheelchair permanently.

York is the Southern California representative for SCICure Research Advancement, a dedicated lab for ending paralysis through human trials with non-embryonic stem cells.   The goal York notes is “Accelerate research and get us out of wheelchairs as quickly as possible!”

York recently wrote a letter to President Obama about the foundation’s work and was invited to Washington D.C. to meet with Kareem Dale, Obama’s special assistant.

York told People magazine that “the US spends $15 to $20 billion annually on care and supplies for spinal cord injury victims, [but] less than $100 million is devoted to research.”  He believes that supporting a cure can reduce the money spent on care.

Now York is using his connections to raise $3 million for SCICure and begin a clinical trial program directed by Steven Levesque, a neuroscientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA.

Through donating $1, you’ll be entered to win a trip to Hollywood on the set of The Office.  The winner receives 2 round-trip tickets, 2 nights at a hotel, transportation to and from the studio, a meet-and-greet with cast members, a visit to the set, and a chance to watch the show being filmed.

“The winner can expect to meet a cast and crew that are probably some of the friendliest people in Hollywood,” notes York. “And it would certainly assist in bringing in the funding to help the millions of paralyzed individuals worldwide.”
