Using social media is a great way for disabled persons to not only meet friends, date, but also to network to find online support groups specific to their disability.  Getting in touch with old friends and family is also easy on these sites. Some of them will actually take the search criteria you’ve used to suggest other people you may know and want to connect with from your high school or friends of friends.

Facebook

Facebook.com is a social networking site where you create a personal profile page listing your hometown, hobbies, interests, previous schools, organizations and companies you’ve been associated with and have the ability to search other users for common interests as well as re-connect with those you’ve lost touch with. Facebook also has special interest groups for all genres of people.

Facebook is the largest social networking site available on the internet and is even offered as an application on many smart phones to keep in contact with updates of your friends as well as update your own status easily. Facebook takes your previously used search criteria and the contacts of your friends to suggest other members that you may know.

Facebook also allows you to have a real time chat with other users that you have “friended” that are online. Many businesses and organizations have facebook profiles that offer updates on current offers or upcoming events. Facebook has several different applications that allow you to take fun surveys and post them to your “Wall” and send online gifts.

Myspace

Myspace.com is also a social networking site that is widely popular. It is much like facebook in makeup, although the personal profile pages are able to be more customized. Myspace allows you to place music you like on your profile pag, send out event invitations as well as receive RSVPs, and it has online game networks that allow you to meet new people while playing games like blackjack or other popular board games.

Myspace is great forum for online dating without releasing personal information before you are comfortable doing so as well as a blog feature to let your friends know what’s on your mind. Myspace also offers classified ads to sell items, offer employment, living situations, and dating.

Twitter.com is a simplified site that is commonly connected to smart phones. Twitter gives you 140 characters to update your friends throughout the day as to what’s on your mind, where you are, and what you are doing. Twitter is widely popular amongst celebrities and is often updated by the star themselves. It gives a great connection from a celebrity to their fans.

Digg.com is a place to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From big online destinations to an obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted by the users. News and videos submitted by you will be voted on by other users. With enough votes, your submission could be promoted to the front page. A message board “conversation” is linked to all submissions giving you a chance to have your voice be heard.
