Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. Since the 1970s, the Autism Society has celebrated National Autism Awareness Month. It is an opportunity to shed light on autism and educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community.

One way to show your support is by wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon.  The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol amongst the autism community. Wear the ribbon this month by pinning it on your shirt, a magnet on your car, a badge on your blog, or even your profile picture on Facebook.

Another way to help is by spreading the word! It can be as simple as posting it as an update or status on your Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace pages. The Autism Society has asked everyone to change their status for the month of April to “Autism affects 1 in 110. Text “AUTISM” to 50555 to donate $10 to the Autism Society.” One hundred percent of the donations will go the Autism Society’s efforts of improving the lives of those with autism.

Don’t forget to get involved with legislation that affects the autistic community. The are many bills moving through Congress that will impact those with autism and their families and the people who help love and support them. For more information about legislation and on how to get involved,  go to www.vote4autism.org.
