The United Spinal Association developed a free online training program to help save the lives of the disabled in fire emergencies. The goals of this training program are to review the features of building code life/fire safety requirements for newly constructed buildings and facilities that affect people with mobility impairments and evacuation protocols from the workplace and home for wheelchair users and people with disabilities.
“When utilizing this fire safety training program, you are taking a significant step to ensure that people with disabilities and all stakeholders are aware of the important features found in buildings designed and built in conformance with widely adopted codes and standards developed to protect people with disabilities in the event of an emergency,” said Kleo King, senior vice president of Accessibility Services at United Spinal Association.
The online training program on fire safety for wheelchair users can be downloaded for free and shared with others. Funding assistance for the program came from Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. The program is available in Spanish and English and may be downloaded at http://www.accessibility-services.com/fire-safety-for-wheelchair-users.html
This program approaches fire safety from the angle of the disabled and what they should do in the emergency of a fire. Not only is this program essential to those in wheelchairs, but also for fire and building code officials, emergency plan coordinators, building owners and supervisors, employers and fire marshals. In addition this program provides great tips on fire prevention.
